Microbial degradation is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method for removing microcystin-LR (MC-LR). However, the application of free bacteria has limitations due to low operational stability and difficulties in recovery. In a previous study, our group successfully isolated a highly efficient MC-LR-degrading bacterium, Sphingopyxis sp. YF1, from Taihu. To enhance its practical potential in addressing MC-LR-contaminated water pollution, a novel biological material named polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fiber @Sphingopyxis sp. YF1 (PAN-CF@YF1) was synthesized. The immobilization conditions of strain Sphingopyxis sp. YF1 on PAN-CF surfaces were optimized using Box–Behnken design and response surface methodology (RSM), which turned out to be an optimal pH of 7.6 for the culture medium, a ratio of 0.038 g of supporting materials per 100 mL of culture media, and an incubation time of 53.4 h. The resultant PAN-CF@YF1 showed a great degradation effect both for low and high concentrations of MC-LR and exhibited satisfactory cyclic stability (85.75% after six cycles). Moreover, the application of PAN-CF@YF1 in the bioreactors demonstrated effective and sustainable MC-LR removal, with a removal efficiency of 78.83% after three consecutive treatments. Therefore, PAN-CF@YF1 with high degradation activity, environmental compatibility, straightforward preparation, and recyclability shows significant application potential for the bioremediation of MC-LR-contaminated water bodies.

The efficient degradation of organic pollutants in diverse environmental matrices can be achieved through the synergistic application of piezo‐catalysis and photocatalysis. The focus of this study is on understanding the fundamental principles and mechanisms that govern the collaborative action of piezoelectric and photocatalytic materials. Piezoelectric nanomaterials, under mechanical stress, generate piezo‐potential, which, when coupled with photocatalysts, enhances the generation and separation of charge carriers. The resulting cascade of redox reactions promotes the degradation of a wide spectrum of organic pollutants. The comprehensive investigation involves a variety of experimental techniques, including advanced spectroscopy and microscopy, to elucidate the intricate interplay between mechanical and photoinduced processes. The influence of key parameters, such as material composition, morphology, and external stimuli on the catalytic performance, is systematically explored. This study contributes to the increasing knowledge of environmental remediation and lays the foundation for the development of advanced technologies using piezo and photocatalysis for sustainable pollutant removal.

Imidacloprid is an insecticide of systemic nature that exhibits an adverse impact on several non-target organisms. In the present study, potential bacteria have been isolated and used for biodegradation of imidacloprid in batch studies and stirred tank reactor. The optimum process condition for degradation has been found to be at pH 7, a temperature of 35 °C, and a shaking speed of 150 rpm. Maximum degradation of 78% has been achieved by the bacterial consortium in the batch study, while, in the reactor, it increases to 90%. Kinetics analysis suggests that the Teisser model best fits the experimental data, with a correlation coefficient (R 2) of 0.98. Ecotoxicological assessment using luminescent bacteria reveals 40% and 90% inhibition in luminescence in the case of untreated sample upon exposure for 30 min and 24 h, respectively, while the values obtained in the case of treated samples are 9% and 29%, respectively. Cytotoxicity assessment indicates 60% reduction in cell proliferation in untreated samples and <10% cell proliferation inhibition in treated samples, indicating a considerable decrease in toxicity post-bacterial treatment.
