“…The SSUSI images (Figures 1b–1d) were taken in the southern hemisphere. If STEVE is not a hemispherically conjugate phenomenon, the SSUSI images alone are not sufficient to determine whether the arc was STEVE or ring current aurora which is due to ion precipitation (Zhang et al., 2005, 2008, 2023). The ion precipitation would be most likely proton precipitation with associated charge exchange broadening and it is not consistent with the narrowness of the STEVE arc, for example, at 21:00 local time in Figure 1d.…”
