A Standard Mission Profile for Hybrid-Electric Regional Aircraft based on Web Flight Data

Abstract: To reduce emissions of air traffic, future aircraft will install hybrid-electric propulsion systems. We require the load conditions over the time in service, to design these aircraft. In this paper, we propose a mission profile for a regional aircraft with a hybrid-electric propulsion system. We focused on regional aircraft, which are in service in Ireland and the United Kingdom (UK). The reference aircraft ATR 72-600 is a turboprop aircraft with a capacity of 70 passengers. To propose a mission profile, we ha… Show more

“…It is anticipated that, as the application of ‘Big-Data’ continues to grow within fatigue design and the wider aerospace sector (20) , ADS-B data will provide a vital source of data to challenge previous design assumptions, support future design programs and implement in-service monitoring of landing gear components. Within the wider aerospace sector, it is pleasing to see that ADS-B datasets have already been exploited during the development of aircraft mission profiles to support the future design of commercial hybrid-electric aircraft by Jux et al (50) .…”

“…The system is rated for a total power of 4.1 MW, suitable for a twin-engine single-aisle 70-seater aircraft [15]. The aircraft data is very similar to that of an ATR 72-600; see Table II.…”

“…The mission profile and atmospheric conditions have a significant impact on the rating of the components. A detailed mission profile for the hybrid-electric regional aircraft in Table II has been developed by Jux et al [15]. It is adopted in this work due to its relevant and detailed power profile.…”

“…Here, a peak power of approximately 3.7 MW during take-off and climb, and descent can be assumed, based on conventional turbines for a short-range aircraft [41]. At cruising speed and altitude, a continuous power of approximately 0.6 times the peak power is needed [42]. Based on this data, an overall peak power demand of 4 MW is estimated.…”
