A Standard Interface for Debugger Access to Message Queue Information in MPI

Abstract: Abstract. ThB paper discusses the design and implementation of an interface that allows a debugger to obtain the information necessary to display the contents of the MPI message queues. The design has been implemented in the TotalVlew debugger, and dynamic libraries that conform to the interface exist for MPICH, as well = the proprietary MPI implementations from Compaqj IBM, and SGI.

“…The STAT [10] tool and debuggers like DDT and Totalview use parallel call stack graphs and/or message queue graphs. Debuggers use interfaces to the MPI library [14] to retrieve message queue information, whereas MUST tracks all MPI calls during the whole application run. Existing integrations of runtime error detection tools with debuggers, e.g.…”

“…Even though some parallel debuggers support MPI applications, there is no official standard interface for the interaction between the parallel debugger and the MPI implementation. However, the MPI implementation community has informally adopted some consistent interfaces and behaviors for such interactions [2,3]. The MPI Forum is discussing including these interactions into a future MPI standard.…”

“…This new interface builds upon the foundation of and lessons learned from the current MPI -1 TotalView process acquisition interface 5 and the current MPI-1 TotalView message queue display interface [2] both of which have been almost universally adopted by MPI vendors over the past 9 years. To understand the new interface it helps to review the current process aquisition interface at a general level.…”
