A Stable Binary BeB2 phase

Abstract: Potential crystal structures of BeB2 were explored using ab initio evolutionary simulations. A new phase with a Cmcm space group was uncovered. It was determined that the Cmcm phase is mechanically and dynamically stable and has a lower enthalpy, from ambient pressure up to 13 GPa, than any previously proposed phases, as measured using first-principles calculations. The crystal structure, phonon dispersion, phase transitions, and mechanical and electronic properties of this phase were investigated. It was dete… Show more

“…In more than a few cases, incorrect generalizations of the cubic criteria have been published; [6][7][8][9][10] this is particularly frequent for orthorhombic crystals. [11][12][13][14][15][16][17] In other papers, the authors rely on conditions that are necessary but not sufficient. 18 So long as the diagonal elastic constants C i i are dominant, this leads to wrong quantitative analyses, but does not change the qualitative picture (whether a specific crystal is stable or not).…”

“…The use of a glove box is very effective way to synthesize industrially beryllium-containing compounds 5 . Different phases are possible by the combination of Be and B, such as Be2B 6 , Be4B 7 , and boron-rich compounds BeB2 [8][9][10][11][12] and BeB4 (high-pressure phase) 10 . Usually, covalent-bond forming element based compounds show high hardness, for example, BeB2 (Cmcm) 9 , diamond 13 , c-BN 14 , and BC2N 15 .…”
