A Stable 2-W Supply Optical Powering System

Abstract: A 2-W supply optical powering system that maintains electrical isolation is described. The output power of this system is stable and higher than that of conventional systems, and is not affected by environmental stresses, such as bends in the optical fiber or increased PV cell temperature, owing to its feedback control function. The system mainly consists of laser diodes, optical fibers, photovoltaic (PV) cells, and a feedback control circuit, and can deliver 2 W of electrical power. In the feedback control ci… Show more

“…The maximum measured value was as high as 36% at 0.2 W (it is worth noting that this is the average power consumption of the powered circuit, as shown in the succeeding paragraphs). To the best of our knowledge, this value is well over those reported in other published works for similar power levels .…”

“…Power by light (PBL) is an emerging technology that can replace conventional copper wire‐based powering systems in applications or regions that have strict safety requirements . Such applications or regions are usually called “exclusion regions” and are classified in the presence of a risk of explosion or in areas of high electromagnetic noise, such as high‐voltage lines, refineries, mines, fuel tanks, satellites, aircrafts, nuclear plants, and telephone systems .…”

“…The DC bias supply is replaced by a high power semiconductor laser diode that is fiber coupled to a high efficiency photovoltaic (PV) power converter. This technique has been proven effective in high efficiency DC-DC power over fiber delivery systems [6]. The final result is an Optically Sourced Isolated Switching Element (OSISE) that provides inherent isolation between devices and ground.…”

“…Since then, the capability of the electro-optics has improved and the power demand of electronic systems has decreased, allowing much increased functional capability at very modest cost. It should be noted that a few years ago, a group from NTT demonstrated a system of modest complexity using several fibers, capable of delivering 2 W [12].…”
