A spatial regression model for the disaggregation of areal unit based data to high-resolution grids with application to vaccination coverage mapping

Abstract: The growing demand for spatially detailed data to advance the Sustainable Development Goals agenda of 'leaving no one behind' has resulted in a shift in focus from aggregate national and province-based metrics to small areas and high-resolution grids in the health and development arena. Vaccination coverage is customarily measured through aggregate-level statistics, which mask fine-scale heterogeneities and 'coldspots' of low coverage. This paper develops a methodology for high-resolution mapping of vaccinatio… Show more

“…The Gridded Livestock of the World (GLW, [22]) and WorldPop [23] disaggregate population data using statistical techniques and environmental predictors. Outputs of both projects attain good accuracy scores [20,24], but as they result from a downscaling process, both are potentially subject to the MAUP. Despite the fact that the application of the GLW methodology has become robust and its application frequent (e.g.…”

“…Previous studies discussed mapping in spatial-temporal modeling to determine the coverage of diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus vaccine using the Bayesian model-based geostatistical estimates method, the results obtained showed DPT3 coverage of state administration [11]. The spatial regression model was used to map predictions of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis and measles immunization coverage using regional demographic data and field surveys, the results of this study can be used as an indicator of the success of health mapping for regional development [12]. Spatial analysis to provide information on the implementation of immunization strategies in the global community [13].…”

“…There is a growing need for detailed population distribution data to measure and monitor progress toward SDGs, which aim to ensure that no one is left behind. In order to avoid concealing local heterogeneities, the perspective of SDG assessments is being turned from the national and subnational levels to regional and local levels, particularly fine-scale assessments in small regions [41]. In this paper, we selected Deqing County, China, as the study area.…”
