On the drivers of UK direct investment in the Spanish regions: A spatial Durbin approach

This paper empirically examines the key factors driving UK direct investment in the Spanish regions over the period 2000–2016 and, consequently, tries to unveil its main motivation. Applying a spatial Durbin panel model to capture spatial linkages, the results point to the existence of complementarity between the FDI received by a region and that of the remaining ones. This outcome, along with a positive and statistically significant spillover effect of market potential, reveals that complex‐vertical FDI motivation with agglomeration economies prevails among UK MNEs investing in Spain. Additionally, our findings unveil the role played by some other FDI drivers, such as wages and infrastructure. Furthermore, the paper is unique in decomposing the average direct and spillover effects by region and pairs of regions, so that remarkable differences can be identified. This breakdown has strong significance from a policy perspective since it can guide regional policy makers. In short, our findings point out to the fact that FDI policy should be jointly designed by those regions presenting strong bilateral spillover effects. Thus, greater cooperation among policy makers would be welcome.

The characteristics of neighbouring regions, namely third-region effects, have become major determinants of location decision for FDI. The literature on spatial effects primarily focused on FDI from advanced economies, while it remains unclear to what extent the spatial effects have influenced the location of FDI by different industries from emerging economies in a host country. Using data on Mainland Chinese outward FDI in the United States at the state level from 2005 to 2017 and a spatial Durbin model, this study presents empirical evidence on the positive influence of third-region effects on location decisions for Chinese OFDI. Specifically, Chinese OFDI in one state complements those in neighbouring states. In addition, manufacturing FDI tends to follow strategic asset seeking and is influenced by third-region effects, whereas service FDI focuses more on market seeking. Finally, this study shows that social-cultural networks considerably facilitate Mainland Chinese investments in overseas markets.

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the key economic and geographical characteristics of the investment development of Belarus and how these characteristics could evolve in the future. The evaluation of the investment development of Belarus is based on comparative economic analysis, spatial analysis research methods and the cartographic method. Our results indicate a stable, predictable and enabling investment policy as the main determinant for attracting investment. This is confirmed by changes in the spatial distribution of foreign investment inflows in the real economy of Belarus by countries for 2010 and 2018. The characteristics of Belarusian investment development are identified because of the need to intensify innovative performance in the strategic dimensions of sustainable development. Particular attention is paid to the development of special economic zones with preferential regimes in the Republic of Belarus. This paper provides important new insights into the future prospects for Belarusian investment development on the basis of identified specifics.
