A spatial generalized ordered response model to examine highway crash injury severity

Abstract: This paper proposes a flexible econometric structure for injury severity analysis at the level of individual crashes that recognizes the ordinal nature of injury severity categories, allows unobserved heterogeneity in the effects of contributing factors, as well as accommodates spatial dependencies in the injury severity levels experienced in crashes that occur close to one another in space. The modeling framework is applied to analyze the injury severity sustained in crashes occurring on highway road segments… Show more

“…Discrete Choice Models (DCMs) consider aggregate consumer demand to be the result of a combination of several decisions made by each individual of a population under consideration, where each decision of each individual consists of a choice made among a finite set of available alternatives (Ben-Akiva and Lerman, 1985;Bierlaire, 1998;Bhat, 2012). DCMs explain individual choice behavior as the consequence of preferences that an individual ascribes to her or his available set of alternatives, with the assumption that the consumer then chooses the most preferred available outcome.…”

“…An existing literature displays [38] that they are more willing to commit stop sign running, red light running, improper turning, and speeding at intersections; however, they may quickly react to the dangerous situations to avoid crashes. Even if they are involved in traffic crashes, they are less likely to suffer serious injuries owing to their strong physiological strength in withstanding crash impacts [26,39].…”

“…Although some of the criticisms raised are valid, these issues can be overcome by improving applied spatial econometrics work. Moreover, spatial econometrics methods (spatial lag and spatial error models) are used today in many applied studies in various research fields (Castro et al 2013;Lazrak et al 2013;Weidmann and Salehyan 2013), as they are used here.…”
