A Spatial Analysis of the R&D-Productivity Nexus at Firm Level

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effect of research and development (R&D) on productivity by taking into account productivity spillovers. To this end, by using a sample of Italian manufacturing firms over the period 2004–2006 provided by the Xth UniCredit‐Capitalia survey (2008), we have analyzed the role of R&D in firm productivity by using a spatial autoregressive model. In so doing, we have allowed the productivity of each firm to be affected by the productivity of nearby firms. Results show that R&… Show more

“…The effect of this external potential on the performance of firms is approximated by sectoral structural capital in the regression models. The explanatory power of this variable is significant but the correlation of it with the dependent variable is negative and weak (beta: À0.012) which shows that spillover of knowledge could not contribute to the growth of Hungarian firms as it was observable in Italian manufacturing firms (Cardamone, 2017).…”

“…To account for the firm's financial structure, we control for the ratio between equity and total liabilities ( Leverage ). As workers' skill intensity is deemed to affect firm productivity (Cardamone, 2017), the cost of labour per employee is considered in the estimates ( LC ratio ) [11]. Foreign ownership, by introducing new knowledge and best technical and managerial practices into the firm (Blomström and Kokko, 1998), may affect a firm's productivity level positively.…”

“…Specifically, local labour mobility and informal interactions in the milieu with specialized suppliers, customers and competitors are the channels through which knowledge spillovers occur (Kesidou and Romijn, 2008). While face-to-face contacts with competitors facilitate the exchange of information about novelties and innovation and market opportunities (Breschi and Lissoni, 2001), competitive pressure prompts the adoption of best practices and technologies employed by other efficient companies, hence stimulating the productivity of nearby firms (Cardamone, 2017).…”
