A solution for SGi-LAN services virtualization using NFV and SDN

Abstract: Today operators deploy functions like Deep PacketInspection, Caches, traffic optimization, NAT and Firewall on the SGi/Gi-LAN for subscribers accessing Internet based content/services. Currently these functions are deployed on dedicated hardware components from different vendors that most often need to be managed separately. This is not cost efficient and gives long lead times for new services. The main contribution of this paper is the implementation of a solution for virtualizing the services on the SGi-LAN … Show more

“…Some available common environments are the Gi-LAN network used by mobile network operators, residential/consumer services, and inter/intradata-centre networks. Mobile network operators deploy functions such as traffic optimizers, firewalls, carrier-grade network address translation (NAT), load balancers, and DPI, at the core of the network, which is designed for subscribers that access Internet-based services [38]. Here, we briefly explore these environments.…”

“…Deploying and managing service function chains in an inter-data-center setting incurs inter-data-centre bandwidth cost, deployment cost, intra-data-centre cost, and vNF costs [47]. In these environments, NFs are also used for policy-based routing of cloud services and enterprise applications [38], which means that service providers can up-sell their services easily using SFC at the enterprise. This can be achieved by making network services user-programmable.…”

“…For this, SGi encompasses some services, such as Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), rewall, NAT, TCP optimization, and several caches. Gronsund et al (2015) [79] proposed to replace the SGi elements for a physical OpenFlow Switch. The VNFs (TCP and Video Optimizer, rewall, HTTP content lter, etc.)…”
