A Solitary Convexity Dural Chondroma: The Proposed Role of Diffusion-Weighted MR Imaging in the Differential Diagnosis of Intracranial Chondroma and Meningioma

Abstract: Chondromas arising from the dura mater are rare intracranial tumors. We describe a case of intracranial chondroma originating from the durra mater of the convexity, mimicking a meningioma. The neuroradiological and surgical findings are described. The diagnostic clues for the differential diagnosis between chondromas and meningiomas are discussed and reviewed.

“…Due to the slow growth of chondromas, no peritumoral edema appears on MRI. It has also been reported that the cartilage matrix in chondroma can lead to its low signal on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and the arrangement of cells in the lesion shows the apparent diffusion coefficient ( 19 , 20 ). The imaging characteristics, including the “snowman” shape of pituitary tumor, “dural tail sign” of meningioma, vascular lumen and thrombus of cavernous hemangioma, and eggshell calcification of craniopharyngioma, could distinguish ICDs from other tumors ( 21 23 ).…”

“…9 Chondromas, however, are typically DWI hypointense and ADC bright. 10 Moreover, chondromas are avascular on cerebral angiograms compared with classically hypervascular meningiomas. 11 Nevertheless, calcified meningiomas or other osseous tumors (i.e.…”
