A Software Defined Radio based implementation of the “Tower Overlay over LTE-A+” system

Abstract: The basic idea of the "Tower Overlay over LTE-A + " system (TOoL + ) is to offload popular services, especially live video, from cellular networks, thereby decreasing the operational cost of such networks. This can be realized by using High Tower High Power (HTHP) transmitters whose signals can be seen as an overlay to the cellular networks. For the integration of HTHP signals into the cellular networks, the Carrier Aggregation (CA) mechanism known from LTE-A is used. Future Extension Frames (FEFs) provided by… Show more

“…As an example, a common physical layer with a flexible waveform is specified in [3] to provide a unified system suitable for mobile broadband and TV broadcast networks. Complementary to this, [4] proposes a cooperation scenario in which LTE broadcast services are offloaded to a DVB network using the concept of LTE carrier aggregation and DVB-T2 future extension frame. In these studies, as in many others dealing with network cooperation, investigations have been mainly focused on network selection decision and often assume a common coverage area for the mobile broadband and broadcast networks.…”

“…Moreover, a unified BC layer targeting mobile devices, based on DVB-T2 and LTE/eMBMS standards, was proposed in [23]. Closely, the authors suggested in [24] an overlay over the UC network by the BC tower enabling cooperative spectrum usage.…”

“…Therefore, an implementation benefits from the high flexibility and reconfigurability provided by Software Defined Radio (SDR). Additionally, using SDR it is easy to support several standards in parallel [1] thus reducing the number of hardware components and simplifying the overall CE design. Furthermore, SDR allows a fast and cheap implementation of prototypes showing new technologies live [2].…”
