This paper presents the methodology, algorithms, and application of the expanded version of the software tool formed by means of the powerful AutoCAD software and the programming language Visual Basic, enabling both the estimation and visualization of the 3D lightning protection (LP) zone for a high-voltage substation (HVS) and risk management against lightning. Although HVS is outside the scope of IEC 62305-2, its methodology is adapted in this paper to the case of HVS. The approximate reasoning algorithm for risk management against lightning is based on the implementation of fuzzy sets that describe the measure of the HVS LP and the corresponding risk. Sensitivity analysis pertaining to the risk from the lightning flash (LF) and the corresponding economic evaluation have been carried out for the actual 220 and 110 kV HVSs in function of the impulse current magnitude and protective measure implementation. The formed software tool application enables the formation of the map of risk in the function of the considered facility and the impulse current of the LF, which will represent the constituent part of the future information system of electric power transmission and distribution organizations intended for risk management.

The short-circuit test is an important topic on the study of transformer features. With the shunt capacitor paralleled to the tested transformer, the test current can be reduced by the resonant of the capacitor and the inductance of transformer winding. Furthermore, using the high frequency power supply, the capacitor can be reduced in the resonant point because the high frequency values. In this work, the simulation model of short-circuit test of transformer with different frequency power supply is designed. Under variable frequency power supply, which are 50Hz,100Hz and 150Hz, the shunt capacitors value is given. From the simulation results, the application of the shunt capacitor takes a role in the short-circuit test of transformer. This has a significance role in transformer test research and engineering application field.

Metal oxide surge arresters (MOSAs) have been widely used as protective devices against switching and lightning overvoltages in power electrical systems. MOSAs have dynamic characteristics in low‐ and high‐current regions. The unique model of MOSA, which is able to evaluate all the possible operating conditions of power systems, would surely be so complicated. Therefore, by the selection of an operating condition, the appropriate model of MOSA has been created. Many parameters affect MOSA performance in low‐ and high‐current regions. As a result, MOSA's performance under different operating conditions has been investigated by using a MATLAB GUI environment. To make a software environment to simulate MOSA performance in a high voltage laboratory, temperature variations influence on leakage current and its harmonic components under power frequency applied voltages and also the efficacy of impulse parameters variations on MOSA's residual voltage have been investigated. The designed graphical environment has been used by 40 electrical engineering students. The results showed that the use of the graphical environment had a great impact on the concepts' understanding of MOSA's performance.
