A Social Analysis of an Elite Constellation: The Case of Formula 1

Abstract: This article provides a detailed case study of F1 motor racing teams to better grasp the nature of contemporary elite formation. Drawing on an analysis of senior figures in F1 teams, and on a wider study of the industry, we argue that this affluent elite needs to be understood as part of a temporal ecology which deploys a technical habitus which has formed over a longue durée. In drawing out the significance of this approach, we extend analytical repertoires to focus on processes of accumulation. Building on t… Show more

“…Processes of accumulation of capitals, resources, and assets by influential elites have been documented (Savage et al, 2005 ; Toft, 2019 ). As accumulation of different forms of capital often takes more than one generation, it is necessary to study elites historically (Nichols & Savage, 2017 ). This has even extended to historical analysis of changes in the upper classes (Scott, 1982 ) or relations between different power forms within large scale societies (Mann, 1986 ).…”

“…Researchers in the social sciences broadly view elites as having the capacity to exercise disproportionate power over market agents and political organisations across networks (Daloz, 2010;Savage and Williams, 2008) influencing causal effects to enact change (Scott, 2008). More recently, researchers have moved away from studies of political elites and 'the establishment', to examine financial elites (Savage and Williams, 2008), although this has often oversimplified the complexity of elite networks, leaving them bounded in particular fields (Nichols and Savage, 2017). Instead, Nichols and Savage (2017) have suggested a turn to examine how elite networks can be messier, as temporal constellations, which straddle different arenas.…”
