Wireless mobile networks frequently need remote software updates to add or adjust the tasks of mobile nodes. Software update traffic, particularly in the Internet of Things (IoT), should be carefully handled since attackers can easily compromise a number of unattended devices by modifying a piece of code in the software update routine. These attacks are quite realistic and harmful as seen in the real world. To protect lower-powered mobile devices, an in-network detection mechanism is preferred. However, due to the mobility of devices, it is difficult to set a network monitor with complete context of software updates. Moreover, even the conventional integrity checks can be fooled by a replaced binary code or minimized modification. In this paper, we tackle this problem and propose CodeDog, a new approach to check the integrity of software updates in mobile environments. CodeDog generates a binary code with semantics markers. A validation of those markers proves the control flow semantics was unchanged. It can be performed on program fragments for in-network monitoring to protect incapable devices. Our evaluation result shows that CodeDog can prevent attacks in the supply chain with 4.2 % storage overhead.

Fine-Grained Forward Secure Firmware Update in Smart Home

Although the vigorous development of smart homes brings great convenience to people’s lives, smart homes usually suffer from various security threats due to firmware vulnerabilities. Firmware update is a possible solution, but existing methods cannot address the security issues during the update process well. To enable secure firmware updates, a Forward Secure Firmware Update (FSFU) system was realized based on the proposed Puncturable-Ciphertext Policy-Attribute-Based Encryption (P-CP-ABE) scheme. In FSFU, when the service provider delivers the latest firmware, it specifies an access policy and some tags to encrypt the data and appends its signature to achieve both fine-grained access control and authentication. Authorized customers can obtain the latest firmware by decrypting the encrypted data through their private key. In particular, after a successful update, each authorized customer can realize forward security by updating his/her puncturable key, which is an important private key component. In addition, FSFU is further enhanced by outsourcing a part of the parameters and computational tasks. Finally, FSFU was proven to be secure under the Decisional Bilinear Diffie–Hellman (DBDH) assumption. Our proposed FSFU is efficient from both the theoretical analysis and the experimental results.

In the complicated settings of WSN (Wireless Sensor Networks) and IoT (Internet of Things) environments, keeping a number of heterogeneous devices updated is a challenging job, especially with respect to effectively discovering target devices and rapidly delivering the software updates. In this paper, we convert the traditional software update process to a distributed service. We set an incentive system for faithfully transporting the patches to the recipient devices. The incentive system motivates independent, self-interested transporters for helping the devices to be updated. To ensure the system correctly operates, we employ the blockchain system that enforces the commitment in a decentralized manner. We also present a detailed specification for the proposed protocol and validate it by model checking and simulations for correctness.
