A smart pipe energy harvester excited by fluid flow and base excitation

Abstract: This paper presents electromechanical dynamic modelling of the partially smart pipe structure subject to the vibration responses from fluid flow and input base excitation for generating the electrical energy. We believe that this work shows the first attempt to formulate the unified analytical approach of flow-induced vibrational smart pipe energy harvester in application to the smart sensor-based structural health monitoring systems including those to detect flutter instability. The arbitrary topology of the … Show more

“…Piezoelectric actuation is advantageous from many aspects such as high actuation force, fast mechanical response, ease of integration, compact design, and low power consumption compared to the power required for the actuation of syringe pumps. Piezoelectric actuators can be used in different configurations such as in cylinder shape encircling a tube and moving the fluid in the tube under compressions and expansions along the radial direction [12] or a disc shape piezoelectric actuator moving the fluid with a dome deflected shape [13][14][15][16][17]. Moreover, even valveless designs of the disc configuration are possible for improved reliability due to the elimination of valves [13].…”

“…Galerkin's method with Duncan's polynomials was used to show the divergent and flutter instability of the system. Unlike the aforementioned methods, Lumentut and Friswell [34] developed the constitutive coupled equations of motion for the cantilevered smart pipe with proof mass (also called the tip or end mass in the literature) offset conveying fluid in an energy harvesting application using extended Hamiltonian mechanics with flow-charge coupling. The approach integrates the simple kinematic equation with deformation theory, linear piezoelectric beam constitutive equation-based Helmholtz free energy and circuit systems.…”

“…The vibration of the composite linear multimorph energy harvester (Lu, et al, 2018) has been investigated using the closed-form distributed parameter. Alternatively, the smart pipe conveying fluid has shown a capability of capturing the electrical energy using the onset of flutter instability (Lumentut and Friswell, 2018). Recent strategies using the array of the piezoelectric beams have been developed for widening power output multi-resonances.…”
