A smart MV/LV-station that improves power quality, reliability and substation load profile

Abstract: Because of the increasing penetration o f dispersed generation and developments in the power demand, the power flows in LV and MV distribution grids will increasingly fluctuate in the near future. To manage these fluctuations while maintaining power quality and reliability, a Smart MV/LV-station has been designed by a Dutch consortium. A prototype of this station will be built and tested. Tests will take place both in the Flex Power Grid Lab in Arnhem (NL) and in a live test grid of the Dutch grid operator Lia… Show more

“…Related work on smart transformers mainly focuses on frequency control [30], voltage stability [31], [32], [33], [34], demand-response in distribution networks with multiple feeders [35] or integration on medium and low voltage microgrids [36], [37], [38]. In most of this work, a single onload tap-changer transformer [39] is considered.…”

“…Extensions of transport capacity of existing networks in especially cities are very expensive and labor intensive operations with a high impact on the built environment. Therefore the development of advanced distribution automation, as in [8], is highly relevant to manage future load profiles and manage congestion and peak loads in local grids and on distribution stations. Within PowerMatching City the DSO can influence the load profile on the transformer by locally transforming the price in real-time.…”
