A smart insole for monitoring plantar pressure based on the fiber Bragg grating sensing technique

Abstract: The analysis of plantar pressure distribution is essential in the field of biomedical and sports-related applications. In this study, a smart insole was developed for the measurement of plantar pressure distribution and the evaluation of body postures using optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing technology. Four FBG sensors characterized by four different center Bragg wavelengths, 1528 ± 0.3, 1532 ± 0.3, 1535 ± 0.3 and 1539 ± 0.3 nm, were located at the first metatarsus, third metatarsus, fifth metatarsus a… Show more

“…This would appear to have many potential applications for post-operative physiotherapy in orthopaedics and sports medicine [677][678][679]. Optical fibre Bragg-Grating sensing was developed some time ago [680] and proves to be a useful technique for monitoring posture and pressure [681]. Attention has also been directed at how smart textiles may improve prosthetics for amputees.…”

“…As diabetic is a major risk factor for peripheral arterial disease, the pulse rate is sensed. Neuropathy, peripheral arterial diseases and vascular alterations are the common causes of foot ulcer which can be prevented by monitoring the changes in temperature, pressure and heart rate (Lakho et al, 2019).…”
