The joints in an assembled structure represent a significant source of energy dissipation and may lead to overall stiffness variation, which may affect high cycle fatigue failure. Many approaches have been developed to model and simulate the dynamics of bolted joint structures. However, the inherent dynamics of the contact interfaces still need further investigation in order to be able to generate accurate models to predict the behaviour in the contact interface. In this paper, the modelling of the contact interface of a bolted lap-joint and the prediction of its pressure distribution are considered using 2D and 3D FE models. A 3D finite element model with solid elements is developed to simulate the behaviour of the contact interface. The model is a modified thin-layer element where the material properties of a thin layer are distributed over the contact interface. Due to the high computational cost of the 3D model, a reduced-order model is proposed for the lap-joint in which beam elements are used. The material properties are introduced in these models to account for the variability in the contact parameters. Finally, experimental modal properties were used to identify the joint parameters. A good agreement is obtained between the detailed model and the reduced-order model in the prediction of the pressure distribution in the contact interface.

Dynamic Analysis of Bolted Cantilever Beam with Finite Element Method Considering Thread Relation

There are complex nonlinear behaviors and mechanisms in the bolted joint interface. Thus, the bolted joint is crucial to the complex nonlinear dynamic response of the structure. However, in the traditional structural dynamic analysis, the screw connection is usually neglected, which makes it challenging to analyze and study the nonlinear dynamic behavior of bolted structures. Hence, based on the Timoshenko beam theory and finite element method, this paper introduces a model considering thread connection to analyze the dynamic response under different excitation. Eventually, the results indicate that owing to the local nonlinearity of bolts, the whole bolted cantilever beam shows hardening-type characteristics. In addition, the frequency response curve also depicts the typical nonlinear phenomenon of instability and uncertainty, namely bifurcation, which preliminarily verifies the correctness and accuracy of the bolted cantilever beam model.

A stick-slip tangential contact model between rough surfaces was proposed in this paper. The Mindlin partial slip solution for elastic contact and the double linear formulation developed by Fujimoto for plastic contact in conjunction with the Coulomb dry friction law were used to derive tangential contact formulas. Pearson system of frequency curves was used to generate non-Gaussian random surfaces. Effects of skewness and kurtosis on normal and tangential contact responses were studied independently. The results showed that negative skewness predicted lower mean separation for a given normal force and greater tangential stiffness, while for positive skewness, there exist different trends from negative skewness. With the increase of kurtosis, the load capacity and tangential stiffness decreased. The practical significance of these findings is that it can help engineers to design proper surface textures based on their requirements. A comparison of initial tangential stiffness between predicted results and published experimental results was made. The results well agreed with the experimental results when the non-Gaussian surface effects were taken into consideration.
