A sinonasal inverted papilloma: an evaluation of 38 cases at a single center

ÖZAmaç: Bu çalışmada, kliniğimizde inverted papillom tanısı konulan hastalar gözden geçirildi ve klinik ve histopatolojik özellikleri sunuldu. Sonuç: Çalışma sonuçlarımız, sinonazal inverted papillomların lokal agresif seyirli, nüks ve malign dönüşüm potansiyelleri olan neoplazmlar olduğunu göstermektedir. ABSTR ACT Objectives:In this study, we review patients with an inverted papilloma who were diagnosed in our clinic and present their clinical and histopathological features. Patients and Methods:A total of 38 patients (31 males, 7 females; mean age 52.2 years; range 16 to 84 years) who were diagnosed with an inverted papilloma in the Department of Pathology of our institution between January 2009 and January 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical characteristics of the patients, recurrence and malignant transformation rates were evaluated. Results:Of the patients, 17 had right-sided and 18 had leftsided involvement. Three patients had bilateral involvement. A squamous-cell carcinoma developed in four patients. In these patients, the tumor was accompanied by an in situ carcinoma and varying degrees of dysplasia. One patient had severe dysplasia and verrucous hyperplastic changes without an invasive carcinoma. The rate of malignant transformation was found to be 10.5%. Conclusion:Our study results show that sinonasal inverted papillomas are neoplasms with local aggressive course and potential recurrence and malignant transformation. Therefore, treatment should be radical surgery.
