This paper presents a novel single-phase (SP) active-neutral point clamped (ANPC) five-level bidirectional converter (FLBC) for enhancing the power quality (PQ) during the grid-to-vehicle (G2V) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) operation of an electric vehicle (EV) charger connected in series. This EV charger is based on a dual-active half-bridge DC-DC converter (DAHBC) with a high frequency isolation transformer. Unlike the comparable ANPC topologies found in literature, the proposed one has two more switches, i.e., ten instead of eight. However, with the addition of these components, the proposed multilevel converter not only becomes capable of properly balancing the voltage of the DC-link split capacitors under various step-changing conditions but it achieves a better efficiency, a lower stress of the switching devices and a more even distribution of the power losses. The resulting grid-tied ANPC-SPFLBC and DAHBC are accurately controlled with a cascaded control strategy and a single-phase shift (SPS) control technique, respectively. The simulation results obtained with MATLAB-SimPowerSystems as well as the experimental results obtained in laboratory validate the proposed ANPC-SPFLBC for a set of exhaustive tests in both V2G and G2V modes. A detailed power quality analysis carried out with a Fluke 43B alike demonstrates the good performance of the proposed topology.

Manufacturers want high power density for the on-board battery chargers of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Wide bandgap devices can be used to shrink other passive components by increasing the switching frequency, but the bulk dc link capacitor of the ac-dc power factor correction stage, becomes one of the major barriers to higher power density, because its volume depends on the ripple power at the double line frequency in a dc current charging system. However, if this double line frequency ripple flows into the battery, the dc link capacitance can be significantly reduced. This charging scheme, named as sinusoidal charging in this paper, is analyzed and implemented based on a two-stage battery charging system, which is comprised of one full bridge ac-dc stage and one dual active bridge dc-dc stage. We further find that converter loss causes ripple power imbalance and bigger dc link capacitance. Therefore, the impact of converter loss on the ripple power balance is analyzed, and a feedback control on the dc link voltage ripple is proposed based on this analysis in order to further reduce the dc link capacitance. The effectiveness of the proposed solutions is verified in both Si-based and GaN-based charging systems

Summary Zero‐voltage‐switching boundaries of dual‐active‐bridge (DAB) converter operating with phase‐shift modulation is largely studied in literature. However, several practical considerations are neglected to simplify the ZVS analysis. This paper proposes the full analysis of DAB converter ZVS range considering the switches capacitance, dead time, series inductance design, and input/output voltage variation. Three different designs of series inductance were developed. The prototypes were tested under different voltage conditions considering the whole power range. The experimental results show the considerable difference in ZVS region of the classical analysis and the proposed in this paper, proving the feasibility of the paper analysis.
