A Single-Exposure, Multidetector Neutron Spectrometer for Workplace Monitoring

Abstract: This communication describes a recently developed single-exposure neutron spectrometer, based on multiple active thermal neutron detectors located within a moderating sphere, which have been developed jointly by CIEMAT (Spain), INFN (Italy) and Politecnico di Milano (Italy) in the framework of Italian and Spanish collaboration projects. The fabricated prototypes permit to achieve spectrometric resolution with nearly isotropic response for neutron with energies from thermal to 100-200 MeV, thus being able to ch… Show more

“…An energy spectra measurement system was also set up for the validation of the unfolding capability by using a 252 Cf neutron source. The resultant unfolded 252 Cf source spectrum is in agreement with the results provided in the literature for neutron spectrometry 11 , 20 22 , 37 , 38 , 49 .…”

“…Albeit the complexity, some neutron spectrometry methods have been advanced such as proton recoil method 3 , time of flight measurements 4 , threshold detectors 5 , 3 He nested neutron spectrometer 2 , ultra-thin 3D silicon sensors 6 and multi-sphere methods. In particular, Bonner-type polyethylene (PE) spheres coupled with embedded thermal neutron detectors such as activation detectors 2 , 7 9 ; BF 3 or 3 He proportional counters 2 , 10 – 12 ; CR-39/ 10 B 13 16 ; bubble detectors 17 19 ; paired LiF TLDs 20 , 21 ; and thermal neutron pulsed detectors 22 , have been practical and well-adapted methods.…”

“…The idea of condensing the functionality of a Bonner Sphere Spectrometer in a single moderating device, embedding multiple thermal detectors in a specified geometry, was expressed in the past [1] but it needed about fifteen years to evolve in practical devices with real workplace applications. Two devices were developed during the present decade, namely the SP 2 (Spherical Spectrometer) [2][3][4] and the CYSP (CYlindrical SPectrometer) [5,6]. They were designed to cover the monitoring needs of different types of neutron-producing facilities.…”

“…CYSP-BEAM spectrometer [1] belongs to a class of "single moderator neutron spectrometers" [2,3] that condense the functionality of a Bonner spheres spectrometer in a single moderator embedding multiple thermal neutron detectors. In these instruments the neutron spectrum is obtained via few-channel unfolding [4].…”
