A Single‐Chamber SOFC Stack: Energy Recovery from Engine Exhaust

Abstract: The feasibility of applying single‐chamber solid oxide fuel cells (SC‐SOFCs) to power generators for exhaust energy recovery was investigated using both model and actual exhaust gases. In the experiments with model exhaust gases, a single cell, Ni‐Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9/YSZ/La0.8Sr0.2MnO3, was operated in a mixture of gases containing ppm levels of CH4, C2H6, C3H8, C4H10 and O2. The cell performance was considerably affected by the molar ratio of total hydrocarbons to O2, the operating temperature and the gas flow rat… Show more

“…So, they inherently present low efficiency for the overall cell reaction. Nevertheless, SC-SOFC efficiency can be increased when it is operated using the exhaust from a heat engine [25]. The stability of the cell was checked with the time and thermal cycles under different operating conditions.…”

“…be used for methanol fabrication [111]. Energy harvesting applications such as power generation from exhaust gases of heat engines in cars [222] or motorcycles [142,143] are also envisaged, as the low efficiency of SC-SOFCs can be compensated by the generation of electrical power from waste gases. Several examples of possible applications are detailed in the following sections.…”

“…SC-SOFCs have been proposed to generate electrical power from automotive exhaust gases [142,143,222]. The high temperature of the exhaust gases provides sufficient heat for fuel cell operation, while different hydrocarbon fuels and oxygen are available in the exhaust gas stream.…”

“…However, the low cell efficiency of current SC-SOFCs questions their practical implementation, and energy-harvesting applications where energy is generated from waste gases and efficiency plays a secondary role seem more adequate. Hibino and co-workers installed an SC-SOFC stack in the exhaust system of a motorcycle and a stable power of over 1 W could be generated from the exhaust gases [87]. Thermal cycling and mechanical damage did not significantly degrade the cell performance, indicating the potential of SC-SOFCs for long-term use in harsh environments.…”
