A single center 14 years study of infectious complications leading to hospitalization of patients with primary antibody deficiencies

Abstract: Primary antibody deficiencies (PADs) are a heterogeneous group of disorders, characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia and increased susceptibility to bacterial infections, leading to hospitalizations. This study was performed to determine the main infectious causes of hospital admissions in selective Iranian patients with PADs. Forty patients with PADs, who were admitted to the Infectious Ward of Children's Medical Center Hospital during a 14-year period, were reviewed in this study. There were 115 documented ep… Show more

“…Although selective IgA deficiency is a mild form of immunodeficiency, some patients develop a variety of significant clinical problems, such as CMC (70). Furthermore, Candida infections in individuals with Xlinked agammaglobulinemia (XLA), a mutation in the gene encoding for Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) which leads to impaired peripheral B cell maturation, have been described (71)(72)(73). Lymphoid cancers patients treated with ibrutinib, a BTK inhibitor, develop invasive fungal infections including candidemia (74).…”

“…Hypogammaglobulinemia or antibody deficiency is the major hallmark of PAD patients. Affected individuals share a clinical phenotype with common features, such as chronic and recurrent infections, chronic inflammation, and autoimmunity [2], leading to recurrent hospitalization and a decreased quality of life [3,4,5]. …”

“…In Iran, pneumonia is the most common cause of hospitalization in the elderly and patients with primary antibody deficiencies (2, 3). Nonetheless, only 5% and 28% of patients with acute respiratory symptoms who are referred respectively to primary care physicians (4) and emergency departments (EDs) (5) develop pneumonia.…”
