A Single-Blinded, Randomized Pilot Study Evaluating Effects of Electroacupuncture in Diabetic Patients with Symptoms Suggestive of Gastroparesis

Abstract: This study demonstrates that short-term EA at the Zusanli and Hegu points effectively reduces the dyspeptic symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis and accelerates solid gastric emptying. Sustained improvement in dyspeptic symptoms was observed at 2 weeks after the end of the trial. Its potential for treating gastroparesis may be explored, and a larger trial is required to draw definitive conclusions.

“…EA or prokinetic agents are typically administered to alleviate the symptoms; however, patients may show different responses to the treatments. The findings of the present study suggested that EA significantly alleviates mild symptoms of gastroparesis and the results are consistent with those of previous studies (4,5,7). Among the 34 patients with early responses to EA treatment, 30 had mild symptoms, while only 3 patients had severe symptoms.…”

“…EA has been reported to improve or normalize gastric dysrhythmia via the vagal pathway, and to increase plasma pancreatic polypeptide levels in humans (4,7). Acupuncture restores the balance of parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves, the disturbance of which is considered to be the sole cause of gastrointestinal dysmotility in diabetes mellitus (18,19).…”
