A simulation-based methodology to analyse production line disruptions

Abstract: This article proposes a discrete event simulation (DES) framework to analyse the impact of disturbances, their parameter values, and their interactions, on production line efficiency. The framework is demonstrated by means of a case study of a manufacturing process in an Indian automotive manufacturer. Various scenarios are generated and studied using design of experiment (DOE) to investigate the effects of changes in product, technology, cycle time, and worker competency, and to derive the optimal set of proc… Show more

“…Discrete event simulation models can be thought of as physical systems, with the system parameters as the inputs and the results of the simulation runs as the outputs [26]. As with all real systems, a system designer is faced with the difficulty of choosing the values of the parameters that would improve or even optimize the output.…”

“…Special attention was focused on the modelling of intermediate storages and the strategy of moving the pieces over the production system [49,50]. For each workplace, it is valid for the worker to perform the task and postpone the semi-finished product in an intermediate warehouse.…”

“…The first direction is the scheduling of the production operations in time scale [1,22,27,38,39], and that is the most frequently addressed issue in practice. The second area is focused on the improvement of the production process at the level of the performing of operations [3,16,17,21,32]. To the third area belong some special principles to improve the efficiency of the production process [4, 6÷8, 12÷14, 18÷20, 23÷30, 40÷42].…”
