A simulation‐based evaluation of two proposed alternatives to Luer devices for use in neuraxial anaesthesia*

Abstract: Following feedback to the manufacturers, both systems have been modified and cross-connectivity apparently has been eliminated. Our results indicate that clinicians may not find non-Luer devices immediately 'user-friendly'. More importantly, some cross-connectivity with Luer devices was possible. Our findings illustrate that introducing equipment that is fully compliant with the National Patient Safety Agency alert poses a significant challenge to manufacturers and clinicians. We conclude that before introduci… Show more

“…With the problem of misconnections being formally identified as a serious risk to patient care, and imminent deadlines, there is now an urgent need to evaluate the newly developed devices. Yet few evaluation centres now exist with the skills and equipment needed to carry out this essential work [22,23].…”

“…We read with great interest the recent editorial and paper regarding new connectors in neuraxial anaesthesia [1,2]. Our institution recently replaced all epidural kits with a new product (Flex Tip Plus Ò Epidural Catheter; Arrow International UK Ltd., Uxbridge, Middlesex, UK).…”

“…Genetic research into the condition implicated the ryanodine receptor gene (RYR1) located on chromosome 19 [4,5], and DNA testing is now used routinely for diagnosis before muscle biopsy when a familial RYR1 mutation is known [6]. However, the number and nature of RYR1 variants [7] and the increasingly perceived complexity of the genetics of MH [8][9][10] suggest that there is much research to be done before a universally applicable genetic test for MH could be offered.…”

“…In this issue of the Journal, Cook et al describe their comparison of two new connectors with standard Luer connectors for spinal and epidural needles [7]. Clinicians from one hospital participated (40 anaesthetists, 19 physicians), all said to perform lumbar punctures or epidurals regularly.…”
