ABSTRACT. The Carlson's (1977) Trophic State Index (TSI) is a widely employed tool to estimate the degree of eutrophication in a reservoir. In Brazil, the need of a classification system that would take into account regional characteristics employed adjusted indexes generated by data from reservoirs in the southeastern region of the country. Current research compares responses for Carlson 's TSI (1977) and its derivations for Brazilian reservoirs from data collected in the Pereira de Miranda Reservoir (State of Ceará, Brazil), and analyzes the influence of local conditions on results and their applicability to reservoirs in the semiarid region. TSIs were calculated by data on total phosphorus, chlorophyll a and water transparency. The reservoir was estimated as mesotrophic based on the chlorophyll a variable, and between eutrophic and hyper-eutrophic when based on total phosphorus data and water transparency. Results showed the need to consider intrinsic factors in the discussion on the applicability of TSIs to reservoirs in the semiarid region since the peculiar hydro-climatic conditions and morphometric characteristics make them even more vulnerable to disturbance agents, such as winds which have a significant influence on processes that determine the trophic state.Keywords: hydro-climatic conditions, eutrophication, limiting nutrient, phosphorus, nitrogen, chlorophyll a.Análise preliminar sobre uso de Índices de Estado Trófico em um reservatório do semiárido brasileiro RESUMO. O índice de estado trófico (IET) de Carlson (1977) é uma ferramenta muito utilizada para estimar o grau de eutrofização de reservatórios. No Brasil, a necessidade de um sistema classificatório que levasse em consideração as peculiaridades regionais resultou em derivações do índice original. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi comparar as respostas do IET de Carlson (clima temperado) e dos índices modificados para reservatórios do sudeste brasileiro (clima subtropical) originadas para dados do açude Pereira de Miranda e analisar a influência das condições locais sobre esses resultados, discutindo-se a sua aplicabilidade para a região semiárida do Brasil. Os índices de estado trófico foram calculados a partir dos valores de clorofila a, fósforo total e transparência da água. O estado trófico do açude foi estimado como mesotrófico, com base na variável clorofila a, e entre eutrófico e hipereutrófico, com os dados de fósforo total e de transparência da água. A partir dos resultados, observa-se a necessidade de considerar fatores intrínsecos na discussão sobre a aplicabilidade desses índices para os reservatórios do semiárido, especialmente quando as variáveis hidroclimáticas e morfométricas os tornam ainda mais vulneráveis a distúrbios, a exemplo do vento, que tem influência significativa sobre os processos que determinam o estado trófico.Palavras-chave: condições hidroclimáticas, eutrofização, nutriente limitante, fósforo, nitrogênio, clorofila a.

RESUMO -(Composição e grupos funcionais do fitoplâncton de uma lagoa costeira tropical húmica, Brasil). Este trabalho apresenta a composição e os grupos funcionais do fitoplâncton da lagoa Comprida, uma lagoa costeira tropical húmica localizada no sudeste brasileiro. Foi registrado um total de 28 táxons distribuídos em oito divisões taxonômicas: 26% Heterokontophyta, 21% Chlorophyta, 21% Cyanophyta, 14% Bacillariophyta, 14% Cryptophyta e 4% Prymnesiophyta. Vinte e três táxons foram identificados em nível específico e intraespecíficos, dos quais quatro constituem novos registros para o Brasil e dois para o estado do Rio de Janeiro. O fitoplâncton da lagoa Comprida esteve constituído por alguns flagelados, mas também por organismos picoplanctônicos eucariontes e procariontes, cianobactérias filamentosas e algumas diatomáceas. A biomassa foi menor que a comumente encontrada em outros sistemas lacustres e mostrou uma notável variabilidade temporal. Em relação aos grupos funcionais, as populações foram agrupadas em oito grupos: Q, Z, E, N, X 3 , X 2 , S 1 e Y, muitos dos quais típicos de sistemas oligo ou mesotróficos, tolerantes a baixas concentrações de nutrientes e sensíveis a baixos valores de pH.Palavras-chave: fitoplâncton, trópicos, sistemas húmicos, lagoas costeiras, grupos funcionais, sudeste do Brasil ABSTRACT -(Phytoplankton composition and functional groups in a tropical humic coastal lagoon, Brazil). This paper presents the composition and functional groups of the phytoplankton from Comprida lagoon, a tropical humic coastal Lagoon located in Southeast Brazil. A total of 28 taxa was found, distributed in eight taxonomic divisions as follows: 26% Heterokontophyta, 21% Chlorophyta, 21% Cyanophyta, 14% Bacillariophyta, 14% Cryptophyta, and 4% Prymnesiophyta. Twenty-three taxa were identified at the specific and infraspecific levels, from which four are new records for Brazil and two for Rio de Janeiro State. Phytoplankton of the Comprida lagoon was comprised of several flagellates, but also eukaryote and prokaryote picoplankton, filamentous cyanobacteria and several diatoms. The biomass was lower than that found in other lacustrine systems, and showed remarkable temporal variability. According to the functional-group approach, the populations formed eight groups: Q, Z, E, N, X 3 , X 2 , S 1 and Y, most typical of oligo-or mesotrophic systems, tolerant to nutrient deficiency and sensitive to increased pH.

RESUMOO presente estudo teve como objetivo determinar os teores e as frações de P presentes nos corpos d água de reservatórios no Campus da Universidade Federal de Lavras, verificando a eventual presença de condições de eutrofização. Foram selecionados oito reservatórios dentro do Campus, representando as condições de uso e manejo do solo. As amostragens foram realizadas mensalmente, com início em janeiro e término em dezembro de 2004. Foram quantificados os níveis de P, nas seguintes formas: ortofosfato solúvel (OPS), ortofosfato total (OPT), P solúvel total (PST), P total (PT), P particulado total (PPT), P não reativo solúvel (PNRS), P não reativo particulado (PNRP) e o ortofosfato particulado (OPP Termos para indexação: Fósforo, eutrofização, qualidade de água. ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to evaluate the contents and fractions of P in water bodies at the Campus of the Federal University of Lavras to verify the occurrence of eutrophication. Eight artificial lakes were chosen, representing the conditions of soil use and management in the campus. The samples were collected monthly from January to December 2004. The levels of P in the following forms were assessed: soluble orthophosphate (OPS), total orthophosphate (OPT), total soluble P (PST), total P (PT), total particulate P (PPT), soluble non-reactive P (PNRS), non-reactive particulate P (PNRP), and total particulate orthophosphate (OPP). The pH, electrolytic conductivity, Ca, Mg, Na, K, NO were also evaluated. The contents of OPS were below those allowed by the CONAMA 357/05 Resolution. Nevertheless, other fractions of P were present in high contents, reflecting the soil conditions and the rainfall. Episodes of high P contents were momentary. In general, these water bodies may be considered of excellent quality concerning the P contents. Soil management in the Campus and the treatment applied to effluents and waste waters appear to be suitable avoiding eutrophication.Index terms: Phosphate, eutrophication, water quality. INTRODUÇÃOLagos, represas e rios são as fontes mais valiosas de água potável. Sabe-se que a vida de muitas pessoas depende tanto de lagos naturais como artificiais, os quais fornecem água para beber e desenvolver atividades agrícolas e industriais. Além disso, os lagos e as represas garantem oportunidades únicas de recreação. Por outro lado, as águas superficiais possuem características especiais que as tornam vulneráveis à poluição e degradação. A eutrofização de lagos e represas é um processo de degradação que tem início com a entrada de nutrientes, especialmente N e P, trazidos pela drenagem superficial de áreas agrícolas e por descargas industriais e urbanas não tratadas. A deterioração da qualidade hídrica devido à eutrofização pode causar problemas de saúde pública que resultam em graves perdas econômicas. A prevenção da eutrofização ou a recuperação de lagos e reservatórios eutrofizados demanda um planejamento adequado e o gerenciamento do manancial a ele associado.
