Summary Solar energy is effectively used to power stand‐alone photovoltaic pumping systems (PVPSs) for irrigation and drinking purposes in remote areas. However, random vicissitudes and the unpredictability of the amount of solar energy that can be harnessed lead to difficulties in designing PVPS. Thus, an optimal sizing approach is essential to ensure satisfactory performance. In this paper, a numerical iterative sizing approach based on technical and economic objectives is developed to optimize the configuraion of PVPS. The loss of load probability criteria is considered as the technical objective, while the life cycle cost criteria is considered as the economic objective. The proposed pumping system provides a daily water for a small village in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The proposed sizing approach is used to test all the possible configurations of a wide range of photovoltaic (PV) array sizes to specify the PV array configurations that realize the reliability condition. The optimal size of the storage tank and the optimal number of PV modules connected in series and parallel are specified to keep up a balance between the loss of load probability, life cycle cost, and excess water volume of PVPS. The performance of the system is tested on the basis of the proposed optimal configuration and hourly meteorological data for 1 year. The results show that the proposed system is available throughout most of the year.

The Saharan medium by its arid nature and the availability of solar immense in our country, 7.8 kWh/m 2 /day can return the application of the water pumping via photovoltaic (PV) pumping system. However, due to their relatively high cost, the sizing of these systems implies the use of an accurate tool. In this paper, a new practical formulation is proposed, in order to predict the daily pumped water quantity (Q d) for a given daily array energy output (E pv) profile and any total manometric head (H). The model based on the linear interpolation/extrapolation, called: translation of the E pv-Q d characteristics of pumps. This technique has been developed based on experimental study. This makes practical translation procedure much easier; only four pv-Q d characteristics measured at any E pv and H can be used as the reference E pv-Q d characteristics. The calculated the Q d over a wide range of E pv and H well agree with experimental results of PV pumping system. These results indicate that the translation of the E pv-Q d characteristics based on this method is effective for estimating the performance of the PV pumping system under various climatic conditions.

This article presents a method for simplifying the programming and implementation of the space vector modulation (SVM) algorithm, applied to the prototype of the three‐phase inverter for stand‐alone photovoltaic pumping system using induction motor. In this system, the control is usually based on V/f constant approach. It is known that the SVM approach is fully with mathematical formulas which complicate its implantation. The purpose of this work is to reduce both the SVM algorithm complexity and program size, which becomes about 2.55Ko, and this achievement done based on two procedures: the first, must fixes the location of angular set points on the trajectory of the reference voltage vector. The second is precalculation of the switching times and that is make it feasible and simple due to the technique V/f constant ratio. The proposed method makes the SVM algorithm implementation in the microcontroller PIC18F4550 more easier and tested in the real time platform to control the three legs inverter feeding an induction motor as load. The simulation and experimental results of the proposed method are presented and compared with the theoretical results of conventional SVM. The obtained results are very satisfactory for this kind of application.
