A Simple Planar Polarization Reconfigurable Monopole Antenna for GNSS/PCS

Abstract: The design of a simple planar polarization reconfigurable monopole antenna for the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Personal Communications System (PCS) is presented. The antenna consists of two meandered monopoles, a feeding network using the Wilkinson power divider, two switchable 90 -phase shifters implemented using -microstrip lines and a defected ground structure (DGS). The meandered monopoles resonating at about 1.55 GHz are placed perpendicular to each other. The input signal is divided int… Show more

“…The CPR antenna is similar to our previous design in [20], with the complexity of the biasing circuit much reduced due to the use of a double-pole doublethrow (DPDT) switch. A new unit cell is used to design the MS to achieve a wider operating bandwidth with a smaller size.…”

“…Thus a CPR monopole antenna was proposed in [20] which had a smaller size and a wider axialratio bandwidth (ARBW, AR < 3 dB) than all the designs in [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. However, it had a very low realized boresight gain of about 0 dBi and a complicated switchable feeding network.…”

“…In recent years many reconfigurable microstrip patch antennas [2][3][4], slot antennas [5][6] and monopole antennas [7] were proposed to achieve polarization, frequency and pattern reconfiguration. However, to the best of our knowledge, only four polarization reconfigurable printed monopole antennas are reported from which, only two are circularly-polarized (CP) [8][9]. In [10] an L-shaped slot is created on the ground plane of the monopole antenna.…”

“…Conducting strips were used for proof-of-concept in this case. In [9] In this paper, we propose a simple polarization reconfigurable printed monopole antenna for WLAN applications. It provides linear polarization as well as both RHCP and LHCP.…”
