A Simple Method of Positioning the Iris Disk on a Custom‐Made Ocular Prosthesis. A Clinical Report

Abstract: We report two cases of ocular prosthesis fabrication that make use of a transparent graph grid for positioning the iris disk. The custom-made ocular prostheses achieved intimate contact with the tissue bed enabling ideal fit. As asymmetry may result in a squint-eyed appearance, proper positioning of the iris disk in the scleral wax pattern is vital to fabricating the custom-made artificial eye. The position of the iris disk in the custom-made ocular prosthesis was in symmetry with that of the natural eye, rest… Show more

“…[14] The technique presented in this case report involves a simple and inexpensive procedure for positioning iris disk in wax conformer with the aid of transparent grid. [6] The use of the transparent grid allows the operator to precisely locate and position the iris on custom-made ocular prosthesis in relation to natural eye rather than relying on purely visual assessment. However, in cases of facial asymmetry, the markings may be subjective, and there can be influence of parallax as the transparent grid is held at a distance from the face.…”

“… Simplified technique requiring decreased armamentarium and chairtime as compared to visual assessment by the operator 6 The graph grid mounted on eyewear is relatively more stable compared to the graph grid mounted on the nose 9 The guideline used for adjustment of iris positioning in the patient is the normal conversational gaze, since this would be the most commonly used position of the eye during interaction with people. …”
