A simple method for the prediction of modulus of elasticity for unsaturated sandy soils

Abstract

A simple method is proposed in this paper to predict the variation of modulus of elasticity with respect to matric suction in unsaturated sandy soils using the Soil-Water Retention Curve (SWRC) and modulus of elasticity values under saturated conditions. Comparisons are provided between the predicted and measured modulus of elasticity and settlement values from model footing test results on three different sands using this method. The results of this study are encouraging as there is a good agreement between the predicted and measured moduli of elasticity and settlement values.
