A Simple Method for Measuring the Translational Energy of Ions With an Analytical Mass Spectrometer

Abstract: The average translational energy of ions has been readily measured by applying a variable retarding potential of negative voltage to the repeller electrode. The measured value of the methyl ion from acetonitrile at the threshold is in fair agreement with that in literature.

It is summarized that the fragmentation and structure of several organic ions, including organosilicon and organofluorine ions, have been investigated by using ion kinetic energy (IKE) spectrometry, mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy (MIKE) spectrometry, D-labeling technique and thermochemistry.
