The objectives of the study are to introduce the development of supervising software for double-checking of laterality error in radiology reports and to evaluate the usefulness of detection and correction software by applying it to radiology report systems. An AutoHotkey macro program was applied to the design for double-checking of laterality errors. The software was performed according to the flowchart below: (1) detecting laterality discrepancies between radiologic examination names and the context of the radiology report and (2) providing conditioned discrepancy correction with a pop-up window. The accuracy of the detection was evaluated with 300 radiologic examinations that include the intended discrepancies and concordance of lateralities. The number of detections and corrections were quantified, and the confidence intervals were calculated for accuracy. We also applied this module to previous radiology reports with laterality errors from the radiologic examination database to validate the module. The AutoHotkey-scripted macro program functioned well in the reading workstation, and it was acted successfully as additional software. The detection accuracy was 99.67 % (95 % CI; 99.01-%) in the 300 radiologic examinations from the radiologic reading session. There was one running failure, caused by a temporary lag in the hospital's computer network, but no failures resulted during the second trial. We found that there were laterality errors in 0.048 % (n=14/29,257) of the examinations from the database. We developed detection and correction software aimed at double-checking for laterality errors. This method can be successfully adopted in any hospital software and is expected to be included for a better radiologic reading environment.

The objectives are (1) to introduce a new concept of making a quantitative computed tomography (QCT) reporting system by using optical character recognition (OCR) and macro program and (2) to illustrate the practical usages of the QCT reporting system in radiology reading environment. This reporting system was created as a development tool by using an open-source OCR software and an open-source macro program. The main module was designed for OCR to report QCT images in radiology reading process. The principal processes are as follows: (1) to save a QCT report as a graphic file, (2) to recognize the characters from an image as a text, (3) to extract the T scores from the text, (4) to perform error correction, (5) to reformat the values into QCT radiology reporting template, and (6) to paste the reports into the electronic medical record (EMR) or picture archiving and communicating system (PACS). The accuracy test of OCR was performed on randomly selected QCTs. QCT as a radiology reporting tool successfully acted as OCR of QCT. The diagnosis of normal, osteopenia, or osteoporosis is also determined. Error correction of OCR is done with AutoHotkey-coded module. The results of T scores of femoral neck and lumbar vertebrae had an accuracy of 100 and 95.4 %, respectively. A convenient QCT reporting system could be established by utilizing open-source OCR software and open-source macro program. This method can be easily adapted for other QCT applications and PACS/EMR.

Purpose To demonstrate an alternative method for delivering high quality, large capacity multimedia presentations with all the functionality of the current standard using a commonly carried electronic device, the iPod. Materials and methods 5.5 generation iPod video 30 GB capacity, S-Video cable, Apple universal iPod dock with infrared receiver and remote, Apple MacBook 2 GHz laptop. Results A presentation file was created using Microsoft PowerPoint, exported to QuickTime movie format, synchronised to an iPod and delivered to an audience by connecting the iPod to a visual display unit. The presentation given is similar in all respects to one given using the traditional method removing compatability issues for the presenter at a new venue. Conclusions Advances in storage technology and embedded devices such as the iPod have transcended their use as purely music gadgets and into sophisticated academic aids. In this article we describe how to prepare, format and transfer a PowerPoint presentation for delivery to a display using a fifth generation iPod. The resulting presentation file is capable of utilising transitions and effects and will be free from errors arising due to incompatible versions of Microsoft PowerPoint.
