Evaluations of the composition and biomass of photoautotrophic periphyton, nutrient concentrations of water, and concentrations of total phosphorous of benthic organic matter at eight stream sites in Middle Tennessee were used to: (1) document the composition of soft-algae and diatom assemblages, (2) assess the trophic state of the stream sites, (3) correlate trophic state to percent composition of soft-algae taxa, and (4) construct biotic indices using soft-algae taxa to help monitor trophic state. The concentration of total phosphorous of benthic organic matter was a more accurate indicator of the trophic state of the stream sites we studied relative to nutrient concentrations of water as demonstrated by correlation coefficients for nutrient concentrations to benthic concentrations of chlorophyll a, ash-free dry mass of benthic organic matter, and biotic indices which denote trophic state using diatom and soft-algae taxa. The algae trophic index developed using soft-algae taxa abundance-weighted averages of benthic concentrations of chlorophyll a correlates significantly to all of the benthic characteristics used to denote trophic state. This index is the first to utilize periphyton characteristics, as opposed to nutrient concentrations of water, to assign trophic-indicator values to soft-algae taxa in lotic systems and does not require a computer program to compute.

Abstract:We aimed verify the composition of the phytoplankton community and this life forms that occur in the Capibaribe River estuary, Pernambuco, Brazil. This is a highly impacted ecosystem by anthropic activities. We collected samples of the phytoplankton community at three stations, during three months of each season: dry, from October to December 2010; rainy, from May to July 2011. We collected samples during the low and high tide, at the spring tide. We classified the species based on life forms. We identified 127 taxa, and the majority of species were freshwater planktonic form (FP; 30%), followed by marine oceanic planktonic (MOP; 25%), marine neritic tichoplanktonic (MNT; 22%) and planktonic (MNP; 19%,), and tichoplanktonic estuarine (TE; 3%) and freshwater (TF; 1%). The majority of species identified were diatoms, since it assumes the most variability of life forms, therefore enabling its presence in the different portions at the estuary.

To study the effects of UV radiation on wetland periphyton, glass substrata were placed under acrylic mesocosms in a small freshwater marsh in Michigan, USA. One treatment excluded light in the UV range (<400nm), and another allowed the passage of all light. Substrata were sampled on four dates during August and September 2004. Chlorophyll a, algal community composition, ash-free dry mass, bacterial density and viability, and total extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) content were measured. Algal biomass, algal community composition, bacterial abundance, and ash-free dry mass were relatively insensitive to UV treatment; however, the proportion of non-viable bacteria (p = 0.006) and area-specific EPS content (p = 0.025) were significantly greater in the UVexposed treatment. These results suggest that ambient levels of UV can damage periphytic bacteria and may cause corresponding functional changes within naturally occurring periphytic communities.
