A simple device for the measurement of kerma based on commercial PIN photo diodes

Abstract: The development of a dose reader for the measurement of the radiation dose from neutron and ionizing radiation is presented. The dose reader (kerma meter) is using as active element commercial PIN diodes with long base, which can provide a maximal dependence of the lifetime of minority carriers from the absorbed dose. We consider a simple theory of PIN diodes for the role of the kerma meter and discuss the idea for optimization of the calibration procedure. The characteristics of the dosimeter were measured fo… Show more

“…Neutron absorbed doses are F = 2.5 × 10 12 n eq /cm 2 for Ketek APD and F = 6.5 × 10 10 n eq /cm 2 for Hamamatsu APD. Doses were measured by the special online dosemeter device based on PIN diode calibrated for 1 MeV n eq /cm 2 ; the temperature during the irradiation and measurements was 22 ± 0.5 • C [8]. Figure 2 shows the results of the studies of the APD PM3350 produced by Ketek [9] with LED (left) and with cosmic muons (right).…”

“…Online APD (SiPM) measurement setup is presented at Figure 2.4. It consists of: PIN diode BPW34 connected to Kerma Meter RM20 used for neutron fluence measurement [12], APD sample biased by voltage power supply from Keitheley 6517A, APD tester [13] and Textronix oscilloscope for online measurement of APD diode parameters, TCP-IP/GPIB and TCP-IP/RS-232 converters for the data transfer and control from the control room. PIN diode BPW34 used for neutron fluence measurement and APD sample is placed in ~ 3m distance from the neutron source to achieve the minimal possible intensity of neutron beam for the irradiation.…”
