A simple biological method for detecting streptococcal nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide glycohydrolase.

Abstract: A biological method for detecting streptococcal nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide glycohydrolase (NADG) is presented, based on its ability to inhibit the growth of Haemophilus parainfluenzae. Three hundred clinical isolates of beta-haemolytic streptococci were tested. All isolates producing NADG belonged to Lancefield's group A, C, or G.

“…NADG has been extensively studied since the first report by Carlson et al [l], and at present it is suggested that NADG is involved in pathogenic@, particularly in leucotoxicity [2]. Clinitally, detection of antibodies against NADG provides important information in the diagnosis of streptococcal infection [3-51. For the detection of NADG, a spectrophotometric method using cyanide [2], a fluorescent method using W light [6], and a biologi-cal NADG inhibits growth of Haemophilus parainfluenzae [7] are employed. The spectrophotometric method is not suitable for handling a large number of samples because of its complexity.…”
