A simple approach to nonlinear tensile stiffness for accurate cloth simulation

Abstract: International audienceRecent Particle System models have evolved toward accurate representation of elastic stiffness based on continuum mechanics, converging to formulations that make them quite analogous to fast Finite Element methods. These formulations usually involve the linearization of tensors that help their formulation in the context of linear elasticity. Toward our objective of simulating the nonlinear properties of cloth accurately, we show through this work that this linearization can indeed be supp… Show more

“…Much of the work has been directed towards sheet approximations of cloth [Baraff and Witkin 1998;Bridson et al 2002;Grinspun et al 2003;Goldenthal et al 2007;Volino et al 2009], where the yarn-yarn interactions in fabric are abstracted away and instead treated as aggregate elastic forces on a 2D sheet. Some more recent work has looked at simulating cloth with explicit yarn interactions [Chu 2005;Kaldor et al 2008;Kaldor et al 2010].…”

“…Similar to actual manufacturing processes, sheet-based cloth modelers have often modeled cloth as panels to be sewn together [Carignan et al 1992;Volino and Magnenat-Thalmann 2000;Volino et al 2009]. These initial meshes are then simulated using the sheet-based simulator to generate the relaxed shape of the clothing on a human form with the user making further changes to the initial pattern based on the relaxed result.…”

“…The usual StVK CST element, when it is compressed, can induce instability [Volino et al 2009], because its force Jacobian becomes indefinite. Similar to Teran et al [2005], when the element is in a compressed configuration, we adjust the Jacobian entries to eliminate negative eigenvalues.…”

“…With the development of computer hardware and graphics, the physical method which has a better reality based on Newton's law of motion becomes the mainstream. Physical method has developed a continuum model [3,4] and discrete particle model [5]. Because the discrete particle model uses the relatively simple mechanical form to describe the dynamic characteristics of cloth deformation, the computational complexity is very low, which makes the method performs better in real-time than the continuum model.…”
