A Simple and Versatile Reactor for Photochemistry

Abstract: Safety warning: Any experiment involving flammable organic solvents and air or pure oxygen is potentially hazardous, especially when partially contained, as is the case of the flask of our reactor. We took the following precautions and encountered no problems but we stress the need for readers to make safety assessments for their own experiments as peripheral circumstances may be different from ours. All experiments were carried out in a fume hood or ventilated enclosure with adequate ventilation and the front… Show more

“…While we explicitly demonstrate this functionality for plasma liquid processing, these observations are equally applicable to other interfacial/ux driven chemical processes, such as electro-or photo-chemical reactions, or reactions at a gas-liquid interface. Photo-redox reactions have been previously demonstrated in the VFD 32,33 and complimentary thin lm devices, 34 and this work provides insights for improving the green chemistry metrics of such processes.…”

“…In this case substrate solutions are delivered into the rotating flask via the side port of the set-up. LEDs or UV-Vis lamps effectively irradiate the film generated rendering a system that can be run either continuously or semi-continuously based on low budget components that are readily available in research laboratories [28]. Raston and Stubbs recently reported on a vortex fluidic device that comprises a temperature-controlled reactor zone into which the substrate solution can be delivered continuously ( Figure 4).…”
