A Simple Allergist-Led Intervention Improves Resident Training in Anaphylaxis

Abstract: Physicians underrecognize and undertreat anaphylaxis. Effective interventions are needed to improve physician knowledge and competency regarding evidence-based anaphylaxis diagnosis and management (ADAM). We designed and evaluated an educational program to improve ADAM in pediatrics, internal medicine, and emergency medicine residents from two academic medical centers. Anonymous questionnaires queried participants' demographics, prior ADAM clinical experience, competency, and comfort. A pretest assessing basel… Show more

“…Because anaphylaxis is a relatively rare clinical problem, updating the knowledge may not be enough to improve the management of anaphylaxis. Although it is not the subject of this study, it is possible to plan studies to develop different forms of training that will improve the diagnosis and treatment process 20,21 . It is currently considered to be the simplest measure to have a written anaphylaxis action plan including the diagnostic criteria of anaphylaxis wherever patient care is applied in order to increase the recognition and appropriate treatment of anaphylaxis.…”

“…Recognition and management of ADAM is challenging for physicians. 3 Effective interventions are needed to improve physician knowledge and competency in ADAM. 3 Knowledge gaps of medical students in Anaphylaxis resuscitation have been documented.…”
