The study focuses on how the notion of learning space is perceived and experienced by learners in the Emergency Remote Learning (ERL) scenario. In doing so, the lived experiences of remote learners who were abruptly shifted to a completely online learning space due to the pandemic COVID-19 in the Indian higher education system are documented. Online interviews were conducted with eight undergraduate and four postgraduate students of English and Cultural Studies, enrolled at a Southern Indian university, and their responses were explicated using the Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach. The interviews revealed that the phenomenon of ERL is shaped by dissonance informed by the absence of a familiar learning space. Often the patterns of this dissonance were marked by (1) the perception of learning and learning space, (2) the lack of intimacy in learning and learning space, (3) the negotiations made for learning and the space of learning in ERL, and (4) the challenges to cope with the responsibilities of the ERL scenario. Further, the script approach was applied to analyse the data and the analysis revealed an expansion of the existing internal scripts that were based on previous learning experiences of the learners. The study thus establishes the centrality of space in the process of learning and points out how the lack of a familiar learning space is linked to the absence of internal scripts that considerably impact learning. The study concludes by discussing the possibilities of application of script approach to effectively incorporate the aspect of learning space in new pedagogies and learning models as Blended Learning (BL) and Online Learning (OL) become the new normal worldwide.

This essay, co-written by three art and technology humanities scholars from standpoints of autoimmune experience, takes up the longstanding critique of historical self/non-self models of the immune system to introduce a discussion about biopsychosocial and political affect in autoimmune experience of the 2020s. They argue that an ethos of tolerance and intolerance, long operative in biopolitical strategies of state power (Brown 2009), continues to factor into newer 21st century models of autoimmunity as biopsychosocial, ecological, distributed, and networked response. Drawing provisionally on the danger model (Matzinger 1994), which posits that immune responses are triggered by the perception of threat and not by the presence of “foreign” entities, the authors highlight the kernel of negative political affect in the signaling of danger. Drawing on the work of Silvan S. Tomkins, they describe, theorize, and interpret the role of sustained negative affect signaling, specifically (d)anger, distress, and disgust, in their own respective autoimmune experiences, which they describe as unfolding in achronic time (Freeman 2010, 126). It is proposed that closer scrutiny is needed for the negative affects that shape the infrastructure of (in)tolerance and care that gives life to autoimmune symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment experience in the 2020s, an era in which post-Covid autoimmune conditions unfold achronically in ongoing Covid-19 pandemic time.

TikTok’s queer public culture of mental health support

TikTok offers LGBTQ+ young people a queer public through which to negotiate mental health difficulties. Data from an Australian survey of LGBTQ+ young people was analysed to consider TikTok-specific mental health support. Five key themes of support related to: 1) sharing experiences; 2) encountering ‘people like me’; 3) comfort and safety; 4) mental health education; and 5) feeling less alone. These overlapping themes foreground the affective aspects of TikTok use for many LGBTQ+ young people, reflecting Cvetkovich’s theorization of ‘queer public cultures’. This can be seen in LGBTQ+ young people’s collective negotiations of mental health on TikTok — as a platform that offers new affective connections to queer culture, while continuing an ongoing culture of peer support forged through collective struggle, survival, and creative practice.
