A short scan of Māori journeys to Antarctica

Abstract: The narratives of under-represented groups and their connection to Antarctica remain poorly documented and acknowledged in the research literature. This paper begins to fill this gap. Our exploration of Māori connections to Antarctica details first voyagers through to involvement in recent science projects, as well as representations of mātauranga in carving and weaving. This exploration begins to construct a richer and more inclusive picture of Antarctica's relationship with humanity. By detailing these histo… Show more

“…To what extent do Antarctic stakeholders understand how domestic level science-policy KE arrangements affect their ability to meet their international obligations? New Zealand (NZ) is an active participant within the ATS [24,25] and its Antarctic interests span political, biophysical, economic, scientific, socio-cultural and historical dimensions [25][26][27][28][29]. The recently updated national Antarctic science strategy Aotearoa New Zealand Antarctic and Southern Ocean Research Directions andPriorities (2021-2030) [30] outlines NZ's Antarctic research priorities over the next decade and points to links between research areas and relevant policy forums.…”

“…19 These narratives trace descent lines across the expanses of the Pacific Ocean, the largest body of water on earth, in some cases all the way to the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. 20 Land-based narratives story ancestral migrations that weave networks of tribal communities into the land and waterwaysembedding connections and responsibilities across multiple generations through to today. 21 In this way, narratives provide conceptual and cognitive tools that bring us 'face-to-face' with distant people and places.…”

“…In some cases, histories of exclusion -as well as more inclusionary visions of Antarctic history -may be readily available through existing literature (e.g. Bloom 1993, Maddison 2014, van der Watt & Swart 2016, Seag 2017, Wehi et al 2022. In other cases, institutions may need to support new humanities and social sciences research, as the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust has done through a Public History Fellowship focused on 'hidden histories' in Antarctic research ('What Histories Is Antarctica Hiding' 2021).…”
