Areas of endemism (AoE) are the main study units in analytical biogeographic methods, and are often defined as an area with two or more endemic species living in them, presenting substantial congruence among their range limits. We explored the distribution of land planarians (Geoplanidae, Platyhelminthes) across the southern region of the Brazilian Atlantic forest (from the state of Rio de Janeiro, to the state of Rio Grande do Sul) utilizing DaSilva’s et al . (2015) protocol. We used two methods, Endemicity Analysis (EA), and Geographical Interpolation of Endemism (GIE). We identified nine AoE of terrestrial flatworms in the Southern Atlantic forest. Performance of the methodologies is discussed. These AoE of land planarians can be explained through vicariance events combined with their physiological and ecological own limitations. Interestingly, these AoE are congruent with fine-scale approaches such as that with harvestmen. Most land planarians have revealed to present a very small distributional range evidencing their potential as a good model for fine-scale studies of AoE.

Historical processes that have interrupted gene flow between distinct evolutionary lineages have played a fundamental role in the evolution of the enormous diversity of species found in the Neotropical region. Numerous studies have discussed the role of geographic barriers and Pleistocene forest refugia in the diversification of the region’s biodiversity. In the present study, we investigated the relative contribution of these different factors to the evolutionary history of Pithecopus nordestinus , a Neotropical tree frog, which is amply distributed in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and adjacent areas of the Caatinga biome. We used an extensive sample and multilocus DNA sequences to provide an overview of the intraspecific genetic diversity of P. nordestinus , characterize historical diversification patterns, and identify possible phylogenetic splits. We tested different scenarios of diversification based on Pleistocene Refugia and river barrier models using approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) and ecological niche modeling (ENM). The phylogenetic approach indicate the occurrence of processes of phylogeographic divergence in both time and space, related to historical shifts in the course of the São Francisco River during Plio-Pleistocene period, resulting in two principal, highly divergent clades. The ABC model provided strong statistical support for this scenario, confirming the hypothesis that the São Francisco River acted as an effective geographical barrier during vicariant events in the evolutionary history of P. nordestinus . We believe that the climatic changes that occurred during the Pleistocene also played a secondary role in the genetic signatures identified, reinforcing the divergence of populations isolated by physical barriers. These findings reinforce the conclusion that the two models of diversification (geographic barriers and refugia) are not mutually exclusive in the Neotropical domain but may interact extensively during the diversification of species on a regional scale.

Bertkau described Mischonyx genus based on a juvenile, in 1880. This holotype is lost, and we can analyze now only the original drawing and the description. Kury, in 2003, considered other genus junior synonyms of Mischonyx (e.g. Ilhaia and Xundarava). Due to revision publications, the genus contained 11 species. However, until this moment, none proposed a phylogenetic hypothesis for the genus to analyze whether it is valid or not and if all described species as Mischonyx represent a natural clade. The objectives of this research are: to propose a phylogenetic hypothesis for Mischonyx based on Total Evidence (TE), to propose taxonomic changes based on the phylogeny and analyse the phylogenetic hypothesis biogeographically as well. I studied 54 individuals, 15 of external group and 39 of internal group. I sequenced seven genes (28S, 12S, 16S, COI, CAD, ITS e H3), totalizing 3742 bp. I raised 124 morphological and genitalic characters. I analysed the dataset under two optimality criteria: Maximum likelihood (ML) and Maximum parsimony (MP). The hypothesis with better biogeographic and morphological background is the TE with ML. I described Three new species: Mischonyx minimus sp. nov. (type locality: Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro), Mischonyx intervalensis sp. nov. (type locality: Ribeirão Grande, São Paulo) and Mischonyx petroleiros sp. nov (type locality: Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro). The genus Urodiabunus is junior synonym of Mischonyx. Geraercormobius
