A Short Depression Index for Women

Abstract: The CES-D is a well-known index of acute depressive symptoms experienced over a 7-day period that has been used in literally hundreds of studies. This article presents the psychometric derivation of 8- and 4-item screening versions of the CES-D for use in research with community-based samples. These short depressive symptom indices can be used in those instances where a brief assessment is needed for broad screening or research purposes. Using data from a heterogeneous community sample of 411 women, the 8-item… Show more

“…Perceived stress was measured with the 4-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-4; Cohen et al 1983). The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale -4-item version (CES-D-4; Melchior et al 1993) -was used to evaluate depressive symptoms. A combination of selfreport and objective assessments was used to ascertain cardiovascular comorbidities of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and heart disease, as well as kidney function and history of stroke.…”

“…All patient focus groups were conducted by two PhD-level psychologists, both experienced in qualitative research in this therapeutic area, using a structured discussion guide. Inclusion criteria for focus group participants were as follows: The eight-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-8) [13] was administered at the beginning of the focus groups to measure depressive symptoms. On a range of scores from 0 to 24, higher scores on the CES-D-8 denote more depressive symptoms and a score of 7 or higher suggests clinically significant levels of depressive symptoms [13].…”

“…Depression in the 30 days prior to the baseline interview was measured using a shortened eight-item version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) (Melchior, Huba, Brown, & Reback, 1993;Radloff, 1977). Individuals scoring 7 or higher were considered to have clinically significant levels of depressive symptoms.…”
