A Shell Model for the Filament Structure of Bi-2223 Conductors

Abstract: Abstract-Phase development during the first few minutes of heat treatment of first generation (Bi Pb) 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O y (Bi-2223) multifilamentary wires determines to a large extent the overall microstructure, the efficiency of primary phase development, competing secondary phase development, texture evolution, and grain-to-grain connectivity. It is shown that the filament structure of these wires can be described in terms of a shell model. The shell next to the silver sheath is comprised of well-formed Bi-… Show more

“…Figures 8(d) and 9 show that a dense colony of Bi-2212 grains had formed at the interface between the filament and the Ag matrix and that, on the other hand, a fibrous network of Bi-2212 grains had occupied the inside of the filament. This is consistent with the shell model developed by Holesinger et al to describe the microstructure of Bi-2223 multifilamentary tapes [39]. We postulate that the dense Bi-2212 that formed adjacent to Ag is the strong component, and that the one that developed away from the interface with Ag is the weak component.…”

“…Interfacial regions of BSCCO-Ag have been found to sustain high current densities (Holesinger et al 2005). Silver-sheathed BSCCO wires exhibit poor mechanical properties because of the low yield strength of the metal.…”

“…For drawing process it is important to achieve homogeneity and high density of (BiSrCaCuO) BSCCO powder in filaments. It is preferable to form well-developed alignment of the superconducting powder after several rolling passes [2] . Usually the multi-filament Bi-2223/Ag wire is drawn to a final diameter of 1.7 mm by a series of arc dies, then the circular wire is rolled to a thin tape, thereby the contact area between the forming wire and the rollers increases dramatically during rolling which leads to the inhomogeneous distribution of the plastic deformation.…”
