A seroprevalence and relationship survey of brucellosis between pregnant women and women with spontaneous abortion in Iran

Abstract: Background: Brucellosis is one of the most prevalent diseases common between humans and animals. It is also called Malta fever, Undulant fever and Mediterranean fever. This disease is spread by consuming milk and its unpasteurized derivatives. Clinical symptoms of brucellosis in humans are fever, chills, headache, muscular pain, tiredness, loss of appetite, joint pain, weight loss, constipation, sore throat, and dry cough. The present study aimed at surveying the seroprevalence of brucellosis in pregnant women… Show more

“…The reasons might be that most of these pregnant women had taken proper precautions to avoid brucellosis during pregnancy. A study conducted in Iran in pregnant women reported the history of spontaneous abortion to be 19.9% [ 42 ]. Another study conducted by Elshamy and Ahmed in Saudi Arabia recorded a 27.2% spontaneous abortion rate in seropositive pregnant women, showing a relationship between brucellosis and abortion [ 43 ].…”

“…Spink also did not find definitive evidence that Brucella species produce abortions any more frequently than other bacterial species [ 33 ]. In the same line, several newer studies from endemic regions demonstrated that Brucella seroprevalence among pregnant women with and without a history of spontaneous abortion was similar, i.e., the women with a spontaneous abortion were not more commonly seropositive than those with normal pregnancy outcome [ 18 , 31 , 34 ]. It is important to emphasize that, as a control group in these three studies, the prevalence of abortions among the general population was investigated instead of abortion prevalence among seronegative women.…”

“…† Detailed in Table 2 high risk of being encountered with brucellosis in these areas. Furthermore, the incidence of pregnant women with brucellosis was 1.5% in the study by Roushan et al, 20 while another study showed that the incidence of pregnant women with brucellosis was 20.6% in Iran, 14 and much higher than the extracted highest incidence (5.8%) of brucellosis occurred in pregnant women in this review. This may be explained by that incidence of human brucellosis was high during these years and there were significant differences in the geographic distribution of brucellosis in Iran.…”

“…This may be explained by that incidence of human brucellosis was high during these years and there were significant differences in the geographic distribution of brucellosis in Iran. 14,21 Serum agglutination test (SAT) was the most common laboratory test in the diagnosis of brucellosis in the included studies, indicating its better sensitivity or wider application compared with the culture or PCR. 22 Regarding the clinical manifestations, the pregnant women with brucellosis presented as non-specific flu-like symptoms, and this may cause a huge possibility of misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis.…”
