Objective To investigate the relation between functional mobility and dynapenia in institutionalized frail elderly.Methods A descriptive, correlational study involving 26 institutionalized elderly men and women, mean age 82.3±6 years. The instruments employed were the Mini Mental State Examination, the Geriatric Depression Scale, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, the Timed Up and Go test, a handgrip dynamometer and a portable dynamometer for large muscle groups (shoulder, elbow and hip flexors, knee extensors and ankle dorsiflexors).Results Significant negative correlation between functional mobility levels assessed by the Timed Up and Go test and dynapenia was observed in all muscle groups evaluated, particularly in knee extensors (r -0.65).Conclusion A significant negative correlation between muscle strength, particularly knee extensor strength, and functional mobility was found in institutionalized elderly. Data presented indicate that the higher the muscle strength, the shorter the execution time, and this could demonstrate better performance in this functional mobility test.

Dementia is a severe disease threatening ageing societies, which not only causes great harm to patients both physically and psychologically but also places a heavy burden on patients' families. Medications have been used for the treatment of dementia but with little success. However, serious games, as a new form of dementia therapy, stand out from various therapeutic methods and pave the way for dementia treatment. In the field of serious games for dementia care (SGDC) in ageing societies, there exists abundant research related to this topic. While, a detailed review of the development route and a category framework for characteristics of dementia are still needed. Besides, due to the large number of games, it is difficult to select out effective ones. Yet, there is no unified and comprehensive assessment methods for SGDC. So a reliable assessment model is worth studying. In this paper, we review these existing research work on SGDC from two perspectives:(1) the development of SGDC; (2) the different symptoms in different dementia stages. We also propose a comprehensive and professional assessment model of the therapeutic effectiveness of SGDC to compensate for the simplicity of existing assessment methods. Finally, a discussion related to SGDC is presented.

Background The population is aging globally. Older people living in long-term care facilities have many functional impairments, such as mobility problems and depression. Digital games and so-called exergames can offer a motivating and entertaining way to maintain older people’s physical activity and thus their ability to function. However, previous studies have reported conflicting results about the effects of digital gaming and have focused on community-dwelling older people. Objective To identify, critically appraise, and synthesize evidence about the effectiveness of digital games on older people’s physical, psychological, and social functioning and physical and social activity in long-term care facilities. Methods Five databases were systematically searched, and relevant studies were screened. Fifteen randomized-controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies (total N = 674) were included in meta-analysis. Results All digital games used in interventions were exergames. Meta-analysis showed that exergame interventions have a statistically significant large effect on physical functioning [number of studies (N) = 6, standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.97, p = 0.001] measured by Timed Up and Go or Short Physical Performance Battery and self-assessed physical activity (N = 3, SMD = 1.20, p < 0.001) and medium effect on social functioning (N = 5, SMD = 0.74, p = 0.016) compared to alternative intervention or no intervention. Social activity was not measured in any study. Conclusions The results are encouraging that exergames effectively increase the functioning and activity of older adults living in long-term facilities. Successful implementation of such activities requires the competence of nursing staff and rehabilitation professionals in digitalization.
