A series of new structural models for the OEC in photosystem II

Abstract: A new series of MMn(II-III)(4) clusters (M = Na, Ca) has been structurally characterised and their relevance to understanding the oxygen evolving centre of photosystem II is discussed.

“…Mixed-metal aggregates, involving intimate association of Na + ions with transition-metal clusters [4], have recently drawn attention because of their interesting structural and magnetic properties and also because of their contribution towards the understanding of molecular recognition in biological systems [5]. Structural characterization of Na + -and Ca 2+ -bound Mn 4 clusters has shown promise in recent times for their relevance in understanding the oxygen-evolving center of photosystem II (PS II) [6].To generate homo-and heteropolynuclear complexes the azide ion shows unique bridging group ability [7]. The azido ligand is often used in the assembly of coordination complexes with targeted ferromagnetic coupling, since it can bridge two or more metals using only one terminal N atom in the end-on (EO) fashion, providing a very efficient pathway for ferromagnetic coupling [8].…”
