By using a flexible multidentate carboxylate linker 4,49,499-(((2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5triyl)tris(methylene))tris(oxy))tribenzoic acid (H 3 L), four novel coordination polymers [Mn 7 L 4 (DMF) 4 (H 2 O) 4 Cl 2 ]?10(H 2 O) (1), [Cd 7 L 4 (DMF) 4 (H 2 O) 4 Cl 2 ]?10(H 2 O) (2), [Co 7 L 4 (DMF) 4 (H 2 O) 4 (OH) 2 ]?11(H 2 O) (3), and [Co 4 L 2 (DMF) 2 (H 2 O) 4 Cl 2 ]?4(DMF)?3(H 2 O) ( 4) were obtained and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric and magnetic studies. Compounds 1-3 are isomorphous, built upon a 12-connecting linear M 7 cluster and a 3-connecting L 32 ligand to form a polycatenated 3D network. 4 comprises of 3-connecting trigonal M 2 clusters and L 32 linkers to form a 2D layered structure with hcb topology. The magnetic studies of the M 7 -cluster compounds 1 and 3 show the presence of antiferromagnetic interactions between the M 2+ ions in 1 and 3.
